The Monastery of Cheia

This monastery has existed since the 17th Century, but the current church was built in 1835 by two brother from Transylvania, Damaschin and Justin Barsan.

The land was donated by noble Mihai Ghica. The church is built in the local "mountain" style. The painting in the interior of the church was executed in 1837 by Naum, a painter from the school of Buzau and restored in 1986. Approximately ten monks now live in this monastery.

Cheia can be an excellent starting point for your hike on the paths of the Ciucas Mountains. You may even meet bears, even if you are following the marked hiking trails.
