Fauna :

Over 300 species of vertebrate and invertebrate animals including a great number of international , European and national sole exemplars.

Birds :

The ornithofauna summarizes more than 300 species among them - 70 extra - European exemplars . There are five main types , the Mediterranean type ( Heron ,Glossy ,Ibis , Pygmy ,Cormorant , Griffon Vulture , Shelduck Pelican ) the European type ( sining birds , like Nightingale and Bunting , Seagull Tenn Osprey ) the Siberian type (Whooper Swan , Sandpiper Crane) the Mongolian type (Griffon Vulture , Saker Falcon) and the Chinese type (Egret , Mute Swan , Great Cormorant Mandarin ) .Most of them are strictly protected.

Fish :

About 150 species are known , 30 of them in the proper Delta , Common presence : Sterlet ,Sturgeon , Stor Sturgeon Herring , Carp , Pike , Barbel , Calm waters are preferred by Crucian , Perch , Bream . The saltish medium is populated by fish like Perch , Pike or Turbot , depending on the salinity of the waters and the sea sector shelters Sturgeons (Huso huso ,Acipient sturio).

Mammals :

Their number and variety are ensured by the higher area , generally avoided by the wather . You can see Otter , Mink , Vison mink (with precious fur) , Wolf, Fitch , Wild boar , Fox , Hare , Wild cat , Sands shelter Turtle ,Viper ,colonies of different snakes.

Flora :

It is extremely rich and it is developed on three levels :

- plants with floating leavs (white and yelow water lily thistles).

-riparian plants (reed , bulrush , water fern ,water weed)

-land plants (white willow , poplar , alder-tree , ashtree in the combined woods on the sand-banks

The Biosphere Reserve :

According to the Governement Decision no. 953 on the 27th of August 1990 , the entire Danube Delta was declared a Biosphere Reserve.

As a consequence of the main and the secondary reserves settled by the necessity to preserve the natural process of evolution and to protect the specific fauna and flora , certain areas were strictly protected.
