Not far from Buzau, where the hills and mountains shake
hands, the Ciolanu Monastery hides itself in an oak forest. Once a place inhabited
by hermits, it was rebuilt in 1786 by the hesychaste Vasile of Poiana Marului,
who received the mysteries of "the prayer of the heart". |
| Ciolanu, surrounded
by high walls, is not a simple monastery since it is considered the country of
the old hesychastes of the Carpathians. The first church of this monastery
was built in 1590 and the current church in 1820 by the metropolite Chesarie.

The frescos of the church were created by the famous
painter Nicolae Teodorescu Pitaru. In the church are three icons of Ghe
Tatarscu, one of Romania's great painters.

The Ciolanu monastery holds a museum of interesting religious
art. Among the exhibits are ancient icons executed on wood or glass, worship books
and liturgical artifacts. | |

Established in the forest of the monastery in 1970, there
is "The Stone Sculpture Camp" created as an open air museum.
